Savage Gulf State Natural Area: Stone Door and Big Creek Gulf to Greeter Falls 4-26-14

Today’s hike was supposed to be the Stone Door to Big Creek Rim to Alum Gap and then on to Greeter Falls—-BUT, a last minute unanimous change of pans had us going down through the Stone Door crack and along the much more difficult Big Creek Gulf to Greeter via Ranger Falls. Needless to say, we survived the heat and the difficulty of the trail but when we came to the junction to Greeter Falls (left) or Parking Area (right) we aimed our compass for the parking area—Greeter will have to wait for another day. Nabil Wakid, Faith Bennett and Ann Ford of the Murfreesboro Chapter of the Tennessee Trails joined me on this hike along with Paul Disbennett and his Irish Wolfhound, Dana.

Jennifer and I went on an 87 mile driving tour of Old Tennessee on one of the States 10 Highways and Byways driving tours. We started in downtown Franklin, went through Leiper’s Fork and many many tiny towns along the way snapping pictures of history. We stopped off on a side journey and did our only hike of the day at Stillhouse Hollow Falls between Columbia, Mt Pleasant and Lawrenceburg where there were an abundance of wildflowers and a beautiful waterfall.

The other pictures are of Center Hill Dam. Thanks to Fount Bertram and Anna Schultheis Bertramand the Friends of Edgar Evins State Park, Inc. for a fantastic FREE celebration. If you didn’t go, put it on your calendar for 2015!

This was the annual spring wildflower walk and potluck social at the Monterey, TN farm of Winston and Billie Jo Bowling. There were 19 of us including our “next generation” hike leader, Thomas Bowling, the grandson of Winston & Billie Jo.

The weather was crisp but nice and we avoided the rain. This was the 10th Anniversary hike at the Bowling’s Tree Farm.

Me, Jennifer and the Basset Hound went to Foster Falls on Sunday to just walk and relax. It was my first ever trip to the falls that are located in the South Cumberland Fiery Gizzard area. The location is around The Climbers Loop and we actually saw some climbers–
