Today started off as a day that was supposed to be about kayaking the Caney Fork with some friends. However, when I awoke early to get my stuff together I realized I had a massive sinus headache and all I really wanted to do was go back to sleep.

So I did!

A few hours later I got up and felt a little better so I took a ride to Rock Island State Park near McMinnville, Tennessee but located actually in the tiny town of Rock Island.

In Rock Island you will find Great Falls Dam at the convergence of two rivers, the Collins and the Caney Fork. Located within this area is the massive Twin Falls (also called Great Falls) and a series of hiking trails that are basically strenuous due to the rock hopping that comes with a close up view of the falls.

Absolutely breathtaking was Twin/Great Falls and the area downriver via the Downriver Trail is a very big rocky area that has a few little falls where swimming and playing is allowed. Crossing the road over Great Falls Dam has been closed to both cars and foot traffic and you can no longer frolic under the Great Falls as you once could. But, it is still a wonderful sight and without the frolickers it is easier to photograph.

**you can still walk to the falls but you just aren’t allowed to get under them or in the water around them. The climb down is difficult but well worth the effort.
