Stones River Float 5-15-12

I decided to go for a ride today—-Well, really a float but I was moving. I christened the kayak for the 2012 season by taking a solo trip down Stones River in Murfreesboro, TN. The Walter Hill Dam where I started is about 2 miles or so from my house and the Mona Boat Ramp where I finished is about 5 or so river miles downstream.

The weather was beautiful for a casual float. The water was nice but there were spots where I drug bottom and had to get out once and drag it across the ‘stones’. We have not really had much rain (although we have had some) and I was sort of disappointed in the water level—water seemed to be flowing off the dam nicely but it was not translating to deep water until I had fought and fought with the kayak about 2 miles or so. Then, it deepened and I floated along nicely.

I saw red tail hawks, blue herons, a weasel (of some sort), lots of turtles and some of the biggest fish I have ever seen in a river. One even jumped high right in front of me and startled me so bad I almost flipped over.
